Marketing attribution

Call attribution

What is Call attribution?

Call attribution is the practice of crediting an inbound phone call to the marketing source that generated it — the channel, campaign, ad, or keyword that first brought the caller to a page. It assigns a unique tracking number to each source (via dynamic number insertion or static campaign numbers), then logs which number was dialed, so a phone conversion gets the same source-level attribution a form fill gets from a UTM parameter.

More detail

The mechanics borrow from web analytics. Dynamic number insertion draws each visitor's number from a pool of tracking numbers keyed to that visitor's referrer, campaign, or keyword, so when the call lands, the dialed number itself carries the source. The platform records the source alongside the call's duration, recording, and disposition — and, when connected to a CRM, ties the caller to the pipeline value they went on to create.

Attribution models matter less for calls than for click channels, because a phone call is self-identifying: the caller names the source by dialing a specific number. Sticky session handling still helps — keeping a returning visitor on their original allocation so a later call credits the first source — and multi-touch reports can spread credit back across the earlier email, social, or search touches that fed the session.

The output of call attribution is ROI per source: cost per lead and cost per closed deal measured against the ad, keyword, or campaign that produced the call, so a marketing team can shift spend toward the channels that actually make the phone ring.

Frequently asked

Is call attribution the same thing as call tracking?
Call tracking is the instrumentation — pooled tracking numbers and the per-call log of who dialed which one. Call attribution is the analytical layer on top: assigning credit to the marketing source and computing ROI per channel, keyword, or campaign. The two ship together, but attribution is the question the tracking data answers.
Does call attribution still work when a visitor returns days later and then calls?
Yes. A sticky dynamic number insertion setup keeps the same tracking number allocated to that visitor's original source across sessions, so a call placed on a return visit resolves back to the channel that first brought them in rather than to a generic branded number.
